  1. Question 1 · NEET 2026 · Q65 · +4 / −1

Match List-I (conversions) with List-II (reagents/conditions) and choose the correct answer from the options given below:

    List I

    List II

    a)

    Isopropylbenzene (cumene) → Phenol

    i) (i) Oleum; (ii) NaOH, Δ\Delta; (iii) H+^+

    b) CH3COOH→CH3CH2OH\mathrm{CH}_{3}\mathrm{COOH} \rightarrow \mathrm{CH}_{3}\mathrm{CH}_{2}\mathrm{OH}

    ii) (i) O2_2; (ii) H2_2O/H+^+

    c) CH3CH2CH2OH→\mathrm{CH}_{3}\mathrm{CH}_{2}\mathrm{CH}_{2}\mathrm{OH} \rightarrow propan-2-ol (CH3CH(OH)CH3)(\mathrm{CH}_{3}\mathrm{CH}(\mathrm{OH})\mathrm{CH}_{3})

    iii) (i) CH3_3OH, H+^+; (ii) H2_2, catalyst

    d)

    Benzene → Phenol

    iv) (i) conc. H2_2SO4_4, Δ\Delta; (ii) H+^+/H2_2O

    Answer and explanation

    Answer: (2)

Cumene gives phenol by air oxidation (O2\mathrm{O}_{2}) to cumene hydroperoxide then acid hydrolysis (H2O\mathrm{H}_{2}\mathrm{O}/H+\mathrm{H}^{+}), so A-II. Acetic acid is converted to ethanol by esterification (CH3OH\mathrm{CH}_{3}\mathrm{OH}/H+\mathrm{H}^{+}) followed by reduction (H2\mathrm{H}_{2}/catalyst), so B-III. Propan-1-ol is dehydrated (conc. H2SO4\mathrm{H}_{2}\mathrm{SO}_{4}, heat) to propene, which on Markovnikov hydration (H+\mathrm{H}^{+}/H2O\mathrm{H}_{2}\mathrm{O}) gives propan-2-ol, so C-IV. Benzene is converted to phenol by sulphonation (oleum), NaOH fusion, then acidification, so D-I. Hence A-II, B-III, C-IV, D-I.

  2. Question 2 · NEET 2026 · Q69 · +4 / −1

The functional group that can be identified through phthalein dye test is:

    Answer and explanation

    Answer: (2)

In the phthalein dye test a phenol is heated with phthalic anhydride and concentrated H2_{2}SO4_{4} to form phenolphthalein, which turns pink on addition of NaOH; this confirms a phenolic -OH group. Aldehydes are detected by Tollens'/Fehling's tests, carboxylic acids by effervescence with NaHCO3_{3}, and alcohols by the ceric ammonium nitrate or Lucas tests.

  3. Question 3 · NEET 2020 · Q132 · +4 / −1

Anisole on cleavage with HI gives

    Answer and explanation

    Answer: (4)

HI protonates anisole at oxygen, then I−\mathrm{I}^{-} attacks the methyl group by substitution nucleophilic bimolecular (SN_{\text{N}}2) cleavage. The products are phenol and methyl iodide (CH3_{3}I); the aryl C-O bond is not cleaved by SN_{\text{N}}2. Chapter: Alcohols, Phenols and Ethers.

Why the other options are wrong:

    - (1) Iodobenzene and CH3OH\mathrm{CH}_{3}\mathrm{OH}: this needs I−\mathrm{I}^{-} to attack the ring carbon, but SN_{\text{N}}2 cannot occur at an sp2^{2} aryl carbon, so the aryl C-O bond stays intact.
    - (2) Phenol and C2H5I\mathrm{C}_{2}\mathrm{H}_{5}\mathrm{I}: anisole is a methyl ether, so the alkyl iodide formed is CH3I\mathrm{CH}_{3}\mathrm{I}; ethyl iodide would come from phenetole.
    - (3) Iodobenzene and C2H5OH\mathrm{C}_{2}\mathrm{H}_{5}\mathrm{OH}: the aryl C-O bond is not broken, and anisole has no ethyl group to give ethanol.
