p-Block Elements (Groups 13-14)

Groups 13 and 14 mean the boron and carbon families: borax, boric acid, diborane, allotropes of carbon, oxides of carbon, silicates, silicones, and the anomalous behaviour of boron and carbon. NEET tests this as recall, often through statement-based questions on properties and structures.

Weightage: what the paper actually did

p-Block Elements (Groups 13-14) carried 1 question in the NEET 2026 paper. One paper is a data point, not a destiny: NTA moves weight between chapters every cycle, which is why the weightage tables deserve care. The stable facts are the paper's shape: 180 questions, 720 marks, +4 right, −1 wrong.

Question 1 · NEET 2026

Identify the incorrect statement from the following:
  1. A.Carbon has the ability to form pπ\pi-pπ\pi multiple bond with itself.
  2. B.ECl3ECl_3 (E = B and Al) is a monomer when E = B and a dimer when E = Al.
  3. C.The order of catenation property of Group 14 elements is C >> Si > Ge \approx Sn.
  4. D.Oxygen exhibits only -2 oxidation state.
Answer and explanation

Answer: D

Oxygen shows several oxidation states besides -2: it is -1 in peroxides (H2_{2}O2_{2}), -½ in superoxides, and positive (+2, +1) in fluorides such as OF2_{2} and O2_{2}F2_{2}, so statement D is incorrect and is the required answer. The other statements are correct: carbon readily forms pπ\pi-pπ\pi bonds (C=C, C≡C); BCl3_{3} is monomeric (B uses back-bonding) while AlCl3_{3} dimerises to Al2_{2}Cl6_{6}; and catenation decreases down Group 14 as C >> Si > Ge \approx Sn. Why the other options are wrong: - (A) True statement: carbon forms pπ\pi-pπ\pi multiple bonds with itself. - (B) True: BCl3_{3} is a monomer while AlCl3_{3} exists as the dimer Al2_{2}Cl6_{6}. - (C) True: catenation order is C >> Si > Ge \approx Sn.

How to practise p-Block Elements (Groups 13-14)

Chapter by chapter, against real past-paper questions, on a screen: NEET is computer based from 2027. Read the chapter once, then attempt its PYQs until your accuracy stops climbing, and let the wrong answers tell you which lines to reread. If the chapter keeps refusing to stick, that has its own guide. There is also a free 12-question mock on the exam screen.
