NEET pattern and marking
What the paper is made of, and what NTA has not published yet for 2027.
Exam rules change between cycles. Confirm dates, syllabus and pattern against NTA's official site. We are not NTA.
The paper
| Questions | 180 |
|---|---|
| Total marks | 720 |
| Correct answer | +4 |
| Wrong answer | -1 |
| Unattempted | 0 |
Subject split
| Subject | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Physics | 45 | 180 |
| Chemistry | 45 | 180 |
| Biology | 90 | 360 |
Biology is half the paper. Botany and Zoology together carry as many marks as Physics and Chemistry combined, which is the single most useful fact on this page for deciding where your hours go.
What negative marking actually means
A wrong answer does not cost you one mark. It costs you five, because you also gave up the four you would have had if you knew it. That gap is why leaving a question you cannot narrow down beats guessing it, and why a half-known chapter is more dangerous than an untouched one.
Duration
Most recently 3 hours. This has changed within the last few cycles, so confirm it for your year on NTA's site rather than taking it from any coaching page, including this one.
What is not announced for 2027
The exam moving to a computer is computer based for 2027. The mechanics around it, including shift structure and how the on-screen paper is laid out, have not been published in full. We will not guess them here. Anything you read that states them confidently is worth checking against NTA.
What you can prepare for regardless is what a computer-based paper changes, because that part does not depend on the details.
Questions
How many questions are there in NEET?
180 questions for 720 marks. Physics 45, Chemistry 45, and Biology 90 across Botany and Zoology.
What is the marking scheme for NEET?
Four marks for a correct answer, minus one for a wrong answer, and nothing for a question you leave unattempted.
Is there negative marking in NEET?
Yes. Every wrong answer costs one mark, which is why leaving a question you cannot narrow down is often worth more than guessing it.
