The specific receptors for neurotransmitters in a synapse are present on __________.

    1. (1)

      Schwann cell

    2. (2)

      Pre-synaptic membrane

    3. (3)

      Myelin sheath

    4. (4)

      Post-synaptic membrane

    Answer and solution

    Answer: (4)

At a chemical synapse, the neurotransmitter is released from the pre-synaptic neuron into the synaptic cleft and binds to specific receptors located on the post-synaptic membrane, opening ion channels and generating a new potential. Therefore the neurotransmitter receptors are present on the post-synaptic membrane, not on the pre-synaptic membrane, Schwann cell, or myelin sheath.

Which of the following is not a part of human central neural system?

    1. (1)

      Arachnoid

    2. (2)

      Dura mater

    3. (3)

      Pia mater

    4. (4)

      Pericardium

    Answer and solution

    Answer: (4)

The pericardium is the double-walled sac enclosing the HEART and belongs to the circulatory system. The other three are the meninges - the tough outer dura mater, the web-like middle arachnoid and the delicate inner pia mater - which wrap the brain and spinal cord. Match the following columns and select the correct option.

    List I

    List II

    P) Organ of Corti

    I) Connects middle ear and pharynx

    Q) Cochlea

II) Coiled part of the labyrinth

    R) Eustachian tube

III) Attached to the oval window

    S) Stapes

IV) Located on the basilar membrane

    1. (1)

      P-III, Q-I, R-IV, S-II

    2. (2)

      P-IV, Q-II, R-I, S-III

    3. (3)

      P-I, Q-II, R-IV, S-III

    4. (4)

      P-II, Q-III, R-I, S-IV

    Answer and solution

    Answer: (2)

The organ of Corti lies on the basilar membrane; the cochlea is the coiled labyrinth; the Eustachian tube joins the middle ear to the pharynx; and the stapes contacts the oval window. Thus P-IV, Q-II, R-I, S-III. Chapter: Neural Control and Coordination.
