Given below are two statements:
Statement I: In gymnosperms, the male and female gametophytes remain within the sporangia.
Statement II: In gymnosperms, seeds are not covered.
In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below:- (1)
Both Statement I and Statement II are correct
- (2)
Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect
- (3)
Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect
- (4)
Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct
Answer and solution
Answer: (1)
Gymnosperms are heterosporous, and unlike in pteridophytes the gametophytes never become free-living: the reduced male gametophyte stays inside the pollen grain within the microsporangium, and the female gametophyte remains enclosed in the megasporangium (nucellus) on the ovule. The name itself, gymno meaning naked and sperma meaning seed, records the second fact - the ovules sit exposed on the megasporophyll with no ovary wall around them, so no fruit is formed.
