  1. NEET 2026 · Q99

The main function of bulliform cells in grasses is :

    1. (1)

to make the leaf impermeable to fungal spores.

    2. (2)

      to transport water.

    3. (3)

      to perform photosynthesis.

    4. (4)

to minimize water loss during water stress.

    Answer and solution

    Answer: (4)

Bulliform cells are large, empty, colourless epidermal cells in grass leaves. Under water stress they lose turgor and become flaccid, making the leaf roll or fold inward, which reduces the exposed surface area and thus minimizes transpirational water loss.

  2. NEET 2026 · Q113

Match List-I with List-II and choose the correct answer from the options given below:

    List I

    List II

    P) Conjunctive tissue

    I) Specialised cells in the vicinity of guard cells

    Q) Casparian strips

II) Endodermal cells rich in starch

    R) Subsidiary cells

III) Tissue between xylem and phloem

    S) Starch sheath

IV) Endodermal cells with suberin deposition

    1. (1)

      P-IV, Q-III, R-I, S-II

    2. (2)

      P-III, Q-IV, R-II, S-I

    3. (3)

      P-III, Q-IV, R-I, S-II

    4. (4)

      P-IV, Q-III, R-II, S-I

    Answer and solution

    Answer: (3)

Conjunctive tissue is the parenchyma lying between xylem and phloem (III). Casparian strips are suberin deposits on the walls of endodermal cells (IV). Subsidiary cells are specialised epidermal cells surrounding the guard cells (I). The starch sheath is the innermost cortical (endodermal) layer whose cells are rich in starch (II). Hence P-III, Q-IV, R-I, S-II.

  1. NEET 2020 · Q8

    Identify the incorrect statement.

    1. (1)

Sapwood is involved in conduction of water and minerals from root to leaf

    2. (2)

Sapwood is the innermost secondary xylem and is lighter in colour

    3. (3)

Due to deposition of tannins, resins, oils etc., heart wood is dark in colour

    4. (4)

Heart wood does not conduct water but gives mechanical support

    Answer and solution

    Answer: (2)

Sapwood is not the innermost secondary xylem; it is the outer, living part of the secondary xylem that is involved in water and mineral conduction. Heartwood is the inner, non-living part that provides mechanical support and is darker in color due to deposits of tannins, resins, and oils. Chapter: Anatomy of Flowering Plants.

  2. NEET 2020 · Q52

The transverse section of a plant shows following anatomical features :

Statement I: Large number of scattered vascular bundles surrounded by bundle sheath
Statement II: Large conspicuous parenchymatous ground tissue
Statement III: Vascular bundles conjoint and closed
    Statement IV: Phloem parenchyma absent

Identify the category of plant and its part :

    1. (1)

      Monocotyledonous root

    2. (2)

      Dicotyledonous stem

    3. (3)

      Dicotyledonous root

    4. (4)

      Monocotyledonous stem

    Answer and solution

    Answer: (4)

The described features-scattered vascular bundles, large parenchymatous ground tissue, conjoint and closed vascular bundles, and absence of phloem parenchyma-are characteristic of a monocotyledonous stem. Chapter: Anatomy of Flowering Plants.
